Identify two input devices, apart from mouse and keyboard, that could be used in a shop and give an example of their use A barcode scanner could be used in a shop in order for the employee to scan the product and find out the cost and charge the customer. They could also use a microphone to make announcements in the shop about closing time warnings and special offers going on around the shop
Justify two different situations where the use of a memory stick would be more appropriate than an internal hard drive In a situation where a student had a lot of coursework that needs to be completed both at school and at home, then a memory stick would be more appropriate as it is portable. Also, memory sticks are considerably cheaper than an internal hard drive, and so would be more appropriate for a small business or company
Describe how a physically disabled user could make use of an eye typer A physically disabled user could use an eye typer in order to input numbers and words into the computer using their eyes. This means they would not have to use their arms, meaning it would be helpful for users who do not have the use of their arms
Describe, using examples, the components of a WIMP interface A WIMP is an interface that contains a rectangular area that can hold icons or an application. It contains icons that denote a program, for example, the internet could be represented by an image and clicking on the image would launch the internet. It also contains a menu that is a series of related items that are linked, for example, menus on the page setup of a document in a word processor
Identify two characteristics of a natural language interface and give an example of use One characteristic of a natural language interface is that it does not require specific commands and so therefore is easily accessible by any user. Another characteristic is that it can be spoken or written so can be used by both physically abled and disabled people. An example of its use is Ask.com
Using examples, describe the difference between hardware and software Hardware is the physical components of the computer that can be seen, touched and moved, for example a monitor or a mouse. Software is applications and programs that aid in the general running of the computer, such as a word processing program
Describe two problems that could be caused by a lack of standardisation One problem that could be caused could be the cost of new equipment that would have to be bought in order to bridge the gap between the two standards of computers. There would also be limited or no communication between the devices which would lead to incorrect data being passed
Describe two items of specialist software used by an employee who does not have the use of their arms A puff and suck switch will allow the user to move the mouse around and allow them to click as opposed to using a mouse. They could also use a microphone in order to input text into the computer system
Explain how specialist software can improve how a visually impaired employee can use a computer A visually impaired employee could use a computer using specialist software by using braille keyboards allowing them to input text into the computer. A screen magnifier could also be used in order or them to see sections of the screen more clearly
