Types of long term memory
Episodic memory
- Refers to our ability to recall events. E.g. recent visit to dentist.
- Firstly, they are 'time- stamped'- you remember when they happened.
- Secondly, memory of single object will include several elements, such as people and places.
- Thirdly, make a conscious effort to recall episodic memories
Procedural memory
- This is our memory for skills, actions and how we do things. E.g. driving a car.
- Our ability to do this depends on procedural memory.
Semantic memory
- This store contains our knowledge of the world. E.g. the taste of an orange.
- These memories are not time- stamped. Semantic knowledge is less personal and more about facts we all share.
- Semantic memory is about much more than just 'facts.' It contains a collection of material which, given it's nature, is constantly being added to.
Evaluation
- Critical evidence- Clive Wearing and HM had damaged episodic memories but semantic and proceduaral memories fine.
- Neuroimaging evidence- episodic and procedural memories recalled from different parts of the prefrontal cortex.
- Real life applications- training programme for adults with mild cognitive impairments.
