5 Steps to an effective CRM Training Program

  1. #4 Deliver Training

    • Personal Level: Commercial airline pilots are able to perform in a realistic environment through the use of simulation, whether it is through role play, PC-based, fixed-based, or motion-based
    • Job Level: CMR training can increase crew member dynamics, leadership, interpersonal communications, technical, and decision-making skills.
    • Organizational Level: Analyze and interpret data to complete gaps in CRM training
  2. #1 Determine training need

    • Job Level:A job analysis is used to identify the major tasks and the KSAOs that are recommended for a commercial airline pilot.
    • Organizational level:Concerns the objectives of the Airline and how commercial airline pilots address them through their work performance
    • Personal Level:The KSAOs of the commercial airline pilots and for the job tasks are compared to differentiate the areas of training need. Individual employee training plans are created to enhance a pilot’s KSAOs
  3. #2 Set training objectives

    • Organizational level:The organization must “define the criteria for training success”—(Spector, 2012, p. 169) for their crew members
    • Personal Level:When commercial airline pilots follow all training objectives, they will acquire knowledge and meet the criterion on knowledge tests.
    • Job Level: Well-developed objectives will be beneficial to a pilot’s understanding of the training criterion.
  4. #3 Design Training

    • Personal Level:Individual differences among the pilots are crucial when determining whether or not training will transfer, so the program must address the individual needs of each pilot.
    • Organizational Level:A training program should be designed, and delivery methods should be implemented to better assist pilots during the training process.
    • Job Level:The crew members are expected to apply what they have learned on the job, which is known as transfer of training (Spector, 2012).
  5. #5 Evaluate Training

    • Personal Level:Training criteria for the pilots can be evaluated into two levels: training and performance. The training level is concerned with what the pilots have learned during CRM training, whereas performance level is the training on the job itself, and both contribute to learned behaviors and help improve effectiveness (Spector, 2012).
    • Job Level:Evaluation of a pilot’s efficiency of operations and ability to identify potential threats and to develop, communicate, and implement plans and actions to avoid or mitigate them.
    • Organizational Level:Evaluate to see if the CRM training methods used have minimized pilot errors.
