forgetting

  1. proactive interference

    • older memory interferes with a new memory
      • eg a teacher has remembered so many names from a past class so cant remember new names
  2. retroactive interference

    • when a newer memory interferes with an older memory
      • not being able to remember an old phone number because a new phone number is interfering
  3. interference

    • forgetting because one memory blocks another causing one or both memories to be distorted or forgotten
  4. retrieval failure

    • a form of forgetting it occurs when we don't have the necessary cues to access a memory
      • the memory is available but not accessible unless a suitable cue is provided
      • cues
        • a trigger of information that allows us to access a memory
        • eg meaningful cues
  5. context dependant

    • this is when external retrieval cues during learning are missing during recall
      • students do less well on tests if they do the test in a different room from their usual classroom where they originally learnt the material
  6. state dependant

    • this is when the internal retrieval cues during learning are missing during recall
      • studies show that people who have learnt the material in a happy mood are better when recalling the material when happy
