Working Memory Model

  1. Short-term memory

  2. Baddeley and Hitch 1974

  3. Central Executive

    • "Supervisory" role
    • Monitors incoming data, focuses and divides our limited attention and allocates subsystems to tasks
    • It has a very limited processing capacity and doesn't store info
  4. Phonological Loop

    • Deals with auditory info and preserves the order in which the info arrives
    • Phonological store is the store which stores the words you hear
    • Articulatory process which allows maintenance rehearsal
      • The capacity of this loop is around two seconds worth of what you can say
  5. Visuo-spatial sketchpad

    • Stores visual and/or spation info when required
    • Visual cach stores visual data
    • Inner scribe record the arrangement of objects in visual field
    • Limited capacity which is about three or four objects
  6. Episodic Buffer

    • Added in 2000 by Baddeley
    • Temporarily stores info of events which are happening and maintains a sense if tune sequencing
    • Seen as storage component of CE and has limited capacity of around 4 chunks
    • Links STM to LTM and wider cognitive processes such as perception
