  1. Sensory register

    • coding- each of 5 senses: echoic, iconic, haptic, olfactory, gustatory
    • Capacity: large with information in a detailed form, only remembers info paid attention to, Sperling study (12 letters/numbers) flash up average of 4 recalled
    • Duration: iconic only milliseconds
  2. Short term memory story:

    • Coding: acoustic, rehearsed to maintain in short teem (maintenance rehearsal) elaborated rehearsal moves to LTM
    • Capacity: Miller 1956 digit span test average +7-2, can be increased by chunking.
    • Duration: Peterson&Peterson nonsense trigram followed by 3 digit number and needed to recall trigram while counting back in 3, only maintain for 20 seconds
  3. Long term memory:

    • Coding: stronger so go to LTM, usually semantic
    • Capacity: unlimited, impossible to test but memories can be forgotten
    • Duration: lifetime, hard to test, Bahrick Ps could recall faces from high school
  4. AO3: Murdock, words at end of list easier to remember, supports STM and LTM are separate. Brain scans show STM is prefrontal cortex and LTM is hippocampus. Case study suport HM, made no new LTM but STM was normal.

    • KF contradicts, had poor STM for stuff read to him but perfect if he read it himself. issues with all experiments as used artificicial matreial.
