Multi-store Model

  1. proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin

  2. idea that memory has 3 seperate unitary stores

    • sensory register
      • recieves lots of information
        • via the 5 senses
          • each sense has its own sensory register
        • most is lost due to little or no attention
      • can only hold information for breif periods of time
      • if the information is payed attention to, it goes to short term memory
      • most research focuses on visual (iconic memory) and auditory (echoic memory)
        • iconic memory- stores and processes information for visual stimuli such as shape, size and colour
        • echoic memory- stores and processes information about sound
      • coding
        • iconic- storing material visually
        • echoic- storing material acoustically
      • duration
        • very brief, 1-2 seconds
      • capacity
        • huge as it includes material from all 5 senses
    • short term memory
    • long term memory
  3. for information to be retained as a memory, processes of attention and rehearsal are important

  4. environmental stimulus

    • sensory register
      • attention
        • short term memory
          • retrival or rehearsal
          • remembering
      • echoic and iconic
