ENCODING IN LTM

  1. BADDLEY

    • A: Find out about the nature of encoding in LTM
    • P: Four groups of pp's were given different lists of 10 words (Acoustically similar/dissimilar & semantically similar/dissimilar)
      • Interval of 20mins
        • Asked to recall the words in serial order
    • F: Recall worse for semantically similar words than semantically dissimilar
      • Recall the same for acoustically similar & dissimilar
    • C: Baddley concluded that encoding in LTM is mainly semantic
  2. A02

    • We encode differently in LTM
      • E.G. We recognise sound of sirens & a phone ringing (Acoustic encoding). We also remember faces (Visual encoding)
        • Semantic encoding is not the only method
    • Well controlled lab experiment (pp & situational variables tightly controlled)
      • Even though it was conducted in an artificial environment - Baddley used familiar words in all conditions
        • High in internal & external validity
