Murdock - 1962 (The Serial Position effect)

  1. Primacy Effect

    • First
  2. Recency Effect

    • Last
  3. NAMRC

    • Aim - Murdock wanted to see if the position of a word would have an affect on the recall of that word
    • Method - he asked participants to remember a list of words that varied from 10 - 40
    • Results - He found participants remembered more from the beginning and end than those in the middle of the list. This supports the ideas of primacy and recency effects
    • Conclusion - The participants were able to recall the words from the beginning and the end because the first words had been moved into the LTM and they could recall more from the end because they had been stored in the STM. The middle words had lost through forgetting and displacement.
  4. Simple to be repeated and is therefore a reliable and standardised procedure

  5. Lack of ecological validity because remembering a list of words is not an everyday task
