Multi-Store Model

  1. Information has to move through the sensory register, short term store and long term store to become a memory.

  2. Information from our environment goes into the sensory register. If you pay attention to it, it will pass into short-term memory.

  3. If information is processed further (rehearsed) from STM, it can be transferred into LTM.

  4. Primary Effect- research shows participants are able to recall first few items of a list better than middle ones. Earlier items have been rehearsed and transferred to LTM. If rehearsal is prevented, the effect disappears.

  5. Recency Effect- tend to remember last few items better than those in the middle. STM has capacity of 7 +/- 2, the words in middle if not rehearsed are displaced from STM by last few. Last words still in STM at the end and can be recalled.

  6. In the model, information is transferred through rehearsal, but in real life people dont spend time rehearsing but still transfer to LTM. Rehearsal is not always needed for information to be stored.

  7. The model is oversimplified. Assumes there is only one long term and short term store. This has been disproved by evidence from brain damaged patients which suggests different short term and long term stores.
