Types of Long term memory

  1. Episodic :recalling events from our lives(first day at school )-time stamped-takes conscious effort.

  2. Semantic :our knowledge of the world (the capital of England is London)-not time stamped

  3. Procedural: memories for actions, skills , or how we do things (driving a car/ knowing how to read)- no conscious effort

  4. Positive evaluation: episodic is supported by case studies (KF and Clive wearing- could do semantic and procedural but not episodic-suggests there is different LTM)- brain scans show there are different stores(episodic was in the right pre frontal cortex- semantic was in the left pre frontal cortex- there are real life applications( distinguishing different types of LTM allows specific treatment- episodic memories can be helped in elderly with mild cognitive impairments.

  5. Negative evaluation: difficult to generalise case studies as they have little control-some say there may only be two stores (declarative as episodic and semantic and non declarative as procedural.
