Working Memory Model Baddely and Hitch (1974)
Central Executive: decides what slave system must be used to process information
- Phonological Loop: processes spoken and written information
- Visuo-spatial sketchpad: processes visual information
Kosslyn and Swartz (1981): their eyes moved to the area in the head they were trying to remember, and the longer they looked down the boat they remembered less of it.
Evaluation
- Pros: its good as it tells us how the slave systems can be involved in performing a specific task. more plausible than the MSM as it shows the processing involved. doesnt over emphasise the importance of rehearsal. suggests practical applications
- Cons: only deals with STM. doesnt explain changes in processing. not clear how the central executive works as there is little research to prove its existence. a lot of the research is lab based and so is not ecologically valid and hard to generalise to everyday memory
