      1. SECYD - day care leads to improvements in cognitive and language development (up to age 4)

        1. EPPE - a child who started childcare before the age of 3 had better intellectual development, sociability, independence and concentration.
          1. By school age a child who had experienced day care would show more independence and less anxiety with regard to social behaviour.
        2. Disadvantages for the child
          1. When a child reaches 4.5 years old the children who had spent more time in child care centres tended to show more disobedient and aggressive behaviour tahn those with less experience of child care.
            1. Full time daycare was no better than part time.
              1. Belski and Pleuss 2011 - low quality daycare experinces predict later problems in the child such as them ebing impulsive and taking risks as well as externalising behaviour.
              2. Good-quality daycare
                1. Good adult-child verbal interactions

                          2. Poor-quality daycare
                            1. Poor children to adult ratio
                              1. Failure to promote activities and leave the child unmotivated causing a slow down in development
                                1. Poor communication leaving the child confused and unable to learn
                                2. Li et al 2013: Timing of high quality daycare.
                                  1. Was interested in the effect of high and low quality daycare on infants and pre-schoolers. To look at a combination of quality of day care and whether high or low qaulity care are either of the periods made a difference.
                                    1. Large sample, mostly US, limited generalisability
                                      1. Using secondary data strengthed their findings
                                      2. Belski and Pluess 2011
                                        1. Negatively emotional children are more affected by child care quality than less difficult children.
                                          1. Looked at children age 15 to see whether the negatively emotional child was more likely to show externalising behaviour. If they had low quality day care they were more likely to show externalising behaviour, but not more risk taking or impulsivity.
                                            1. They felt a diathesis stress model explained results because there was an underlying temperament and then the environment acting on the temperament to give the behaviour and characteristics.
