Short-term memory (STM) cannot hold as much information and has limited capacity. Long term memory (LTM) can hold an unlimited amount of info and has a vast capacity.
Capacity-a measure of how much info can be stored in the the STM and the LTM. (STM 7+/-3) (LTM unlimited)
Duration-a measure how long info is held in the memory. (STM 17 seconds) (LTM lifelong)
Encoding-the form info in stored in the memory.(STM acoustic [sound]) (LTM semantic [meaning])
Baddeley- carried out an experiment on STM and showed that it's largely based on acoustic coding and found that when testing immediate recall ppts remembered fewer acoustic similar words than acoustic dissimilar words.
Jacobs researched the capacity of STM and found it has a capacity is from 5-9, but learned memory techniques may increase capacity as people get older.
Bahrick studied LTM and found that within 48 years of living school ppts recognised 75% of the faces and named of old school friends.
