Strength
It can be investigated using scientific methods of investigation.
Studied in controlled conditions such as in Harlow's study of infant monkeys.
Evidence from research can be confidently used to provide support.
Limitation
1. There is evidence from research that challenges it.
Harlow's study of infant monkeys found that baby monkeys who were did not come running to the 'bottle' mother whenever it got scared. || They preferred the cloth mother.
Shows that food is not the main factor in forming an attachment as learning theory suggested.
2. Largely based on animal studies. Some psychologist argue that humans are very different from other animals.
Cannot be generalised to humans
3. Evidence from research that challenges the idea that attachment develops over time.
Schaffer and Emerson found that babies are happy to be looked after by anyone and do not have preferences until they get to about 7 months.
Learning theory proposes that the attachment would gradually increase in strength whereas it appears suddenly at the same age in infants.
4. Alternative explanation for why and how attachments form.
Bowlby's theory of attachment offers a much stronger model of attachment as it is supported by a variety of research and offers many practical application.
It led to rejection of learning theory of attachment by the scientific community.
