1917 - Bolshevik Revolution; Lenin comes to power. The UK and USA both funded opposition.

1918 - Woodrow Wilson issues 14 points. Less secrecy, free navigation of the seas, an end to all economic barriers between countries, reduction of weapons, self-determination and the restoration of much of the pre-war order (particularly for Poland), the establishment of a League of Nations.

1918 - Treaty of Brest-LitovskBetween Russia & Germany; allowed Lenin to withdraw from WW1 and so focus on internal affairs, albiet at the expense of a large amount of economically valuable land.

1919 - Comintern established by Bolshevik Russia.Created to fight "by all available means, including armed force, for the overthrow of the international bourgeoisie and for the creation of an international Soviet republic as a transition stage to the complete abolition of the State" - effectively a collective for communist states.

1930's - Great Economic DepressionLongest, deepest and most widespread depression of the 20th century.

1939 - WW2 startsBeginning of the second world war.

1939 - Nazi-Soviet PactStalin and Hitler; a promise not to go to war with one another, and a secret pact to split Poland.

1941 - Nazi Germany invades USSRHitler breaks the Nazi-Soviet Pact and invades Russia

1941 - Grand Alliance formedBritain, USA & USSR for an alliance against Germany, Italy and Japan.

1941 - Pearl HarborJapan attacks USA directly, drawing the country into war and shaking America's self-perceived geographical invulnerability. 

1943 - Teheran ConferenceChurchill, Roosevelt and Stalin discussed the opening of a second front (Russia) and the future of Poland (see mindmap).

1944 - Naughty Document/Percentages agreement between Churchill and StalinAgreed that E.Europe could be a Soviet sphere of influence - behind Roosevelt's back.
