Research Methods: Data Analysis: Descriptive Statistics
Flashcards do conjunto (12)
- 1What is Descriptive Statistics? The use of graphs, tables and summary statistics to identify trends and analyse sets of data.
- 2Measures of Central TendencyGeneral term for any measure of the average value in a data set: mean, mode and median
- 3Measures of DispersionThe general term for any measure of the spread or variation in a set of scores: range and standard deviation.
- 4Mean Strengths and WeaknessesStrength: Most sensitive of the measures of central tendency as it includes all of the values in the data set within the calculation. This means it is more representative.
Weakness: Can be distorted by extreme values. - 5Mode Strengths and WeaknessesStrength: Very easy to calculate.
Strength: Suitable for trying to survey their favourite dessert then mode is the only option
Weakness: Mode can be very different from the median and the mode so it isn't representative of the data as a whole. - 6Median Strengths and WeaknessesStrength: Extreme scores don't affect it when the median is calculated.
Strength: Easy to calculate once you have arranged the numbers in order.
Weakness: Less sensitive than the mean as all the values aren't included in the final calculation. - 7Why Do We Add One To The Range? It is a mathematical correction that allows for the fact that raw scores are often rounded up or down when they are recorded within the research.
- 8Range Strengths and WeaknessStrength: Can be easily calculated
Weakness: Only takes into account the two extreme values either side so it is unrepresentative of the data set as a whole. - 9What is Standard Deviation?A sophisticated measure of discpersion in a set of scores. It tells us how much scores deviate from the mean.
- 10Standard Deviation Strengths and WeaknessesStrength: More precise measure of dispersion than the range as it includes all the values in the final calculation.
Weakness: However it can be distorted by an extreme value, similar to the mean. - 11What does a Large Standard Deviation Show? The dispersion or spread within a set of data is big. It may suggest that not all participants were affected by the IV in the same way as the data is quite spread out.
- 12What does a Low Standard Deviation Show? The dispersion within a data set is small. This means that participants might have responded in a similar way as the data is tightly clustered around the mean.
