  1. 1A01:From an evolutionary point of view, there are two main advantages of war. One is the expansion or defence of territory, therefore more resources. Also those who win a war gain higher status. Both of these points allow the victors to attract more females, and therefore reproduce more.
-but there are more women than there are men. Men must compete with each other for mates, and those who do well in battle gain access to female mate. This because displays of aggressiveness and bravery are attractive to females.
-Another evolutionary explanation for warfare is that it promotes group solidarity. The costliness of permanent displays such as scars and mutilation serve as signals of commitment to the group. These permanent displays also minimise the ability of males to defect to another group, again increasing their commitment to the group of which they are a member.
  2. 2A02: leunissen-Research has supported the importance of aggressive displays in determining the sexual attractiveness of male warriors. Leunissen found that military men have greater sex appeal, but only if they have been observed showing bravery in combat.
  3. 3A02: Kelley and dunbar 2001-brave men more attractive
-Kelly and Dunbar (2001) said women ‘need protection’ so needed to choose their mates carefully. The heroic bravery shown by those who go to war is therefore a characteristic that is seen as attractive by females. Also females may chose brave mates as these courageous genes will be advantageous for the group in the future as their offspring will be more successful in defending the group in the times of need.
    -higher chance of reproduction
  4. 4A02: Lehmann and Feldman (2008)-said that men who are strong and more aggressive will win wars and survive to pass on their genes; this will lead to an increasingly aggressive species.
  5. 5IDA: real world problem-a male who goes to war is more likely to be killed than those who dont, therefore, putting the family at risk.
-so, from an evolutionary perspective, this could be seen as maladaptive to chose war.
