Flashcards

Coding, Capacity and Duration

Skye Mellor Psychology A level English 10 cards

Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 1What is encoding?Encoding is the process of storing information in the memory
  2. 2Who did research on coding?Baddeley
  3. 3What did Baddeley find? When ppts were asked to recall groups of words straight away they struggled with words which were acoustically similar whereas when asked to recall 20 minutes later they struggled with words which were semantically similar, Suggesting that the stm is acoustic and the ltm is semantic
  4. 4Who did research on capacity?* Jacobs
    *Miller
  5. 5What did Jacobs find?Jacobs found that the mean digit span was 7.3 and the mean letter span was 9.3.
  6. 6What did Miller find?Miller found that everyday things usually come in groups of 7, Eg: days of the week. Using his data and Jacobs data they concluded that the capacity of the stm was 7+/-2
  7. 7Who did research on duration?* Peterson and Peterson
    *Bahrick
  8. 8What did Peterson and Peterson find? The duration of the stm was 18-30 seconds
  9. 9What did Bahrick find? That people could still recall the names of people they were in college with, years after they graduated suggesting that the duration of the long term memory is forever/ a very long time.
  10. 10What are the A03 points against coding, capacity and duration?Baddeley - the materials he used were artificial therefore they lack mundane realism and this limits the generalisability to real life situations
Jacobs - This study was done a long time ago therefore the results may be outdated and have low validity as we can not guarantee that people behave in the same way nowadays.
Miller - Cowan contradicts Millers findings and says that the capacity of the stm is actually 4 chunks not 7+/-2
Peterson and Peterson - The material used was artificial meaning it lacks mundane realism and has limited generalisability to real life situations
Bahrick - This study has high validity as the the situations used were real life memories (remembering names of people you graduated with years later)
