Flashcards
Thematic analysis
Cards in this deck (20)
- 1What is macro (top-down) discourse analysis?Focuses on how we understand the effects of power, knowledge & ideology
- 2What is micro (bottom-up) discourse analysis?Focuses on the actions & effects of situated interaction or conversation
- 3What is a discourse?- A way of representing an object, event or phenomenon in a particular way(s)
- Actively construct how we perceive & understand our social world - 4How is discourse analysed? No universally agreed method but general guidelines are:
1 - Identify discursive objects
2 - Identify discourses
3 - Examine action orientation
4 - Examine effects
5 - Consider context - 5What is IPA (interpretative phenomenological analysis)?- Meaning-focused method
- Committed to understanding the first person perspective - 6What is thematic analysis?Method of identifying, analysing & reporting patterns (themes) within data
- 7What is the aim of thematic analysis? To provide thick description of data by breaking it down into themes & using these to describe & explain what is happening
- 8What is basic thematic analysis?Describes, summarises & represents data
- 9What is sophisticated thematic analysis?- Tells a story
- Interprets
- Makes an argument
- Theoretical/conceptual analysis - 10What are the 6 phases of thematic analysis?1 - Familiarising yourself with the data & identifying items of potential interest
2 - Generating initial codes
3 - Searching for themes/sub-themes
4 - Reviewing potential themes
5 - Defining & naming themes
6 - Producing the report - 11Thematic analysis * Phase 1: familiarising yourself with the data *- Data is to be read through individually & repeatedly > important to do this equally for all responses
- 12Thematic analysis * Phase 2: generating initial codes *Codes identify a feature of the data which is interesting to the analyst
- Refers to the most basic element of raw data that can be assessed in a meaningful way
- Give a label that you think represents the data (captures what is interesting about that piece of data)
- Give similar ideas the same label - 13Thematic analysis * Phase 3: searching for themes *- Theme = coherent & meaningful pattern in the data relevant to the question
- Consider how different codes combine to form a theme > cluster similar codes together - 14Thematic analysis * Phase 4: Reviewing potential themes *Reconsideration of the themes you came up with > Sometimes a theme you developed earlier no longer fits as well as you thought
- 15What is a semantic/explicit level theme?Themes are identified within the explicit or surface meanings > analyst is not looking beyond what the person is saying
- 16What is a latent/interpretative level theme?Examining the underlying ideas, assumptions/conceptualisations & ideologies
- 17Thematic analysis * Phase 5: Defining & naming themes *Each theme is given a name/label & a definition/description
- 18Thematic analysis * Phase 6: Producing the report *Higher-level analysis
- Connecting the data to a meaningful interpretation
- Connecting themes, sub-themes & how they're related to the research question
- How the themes come together to form a coherent answer to the research question - 19What makes a strong thematic analysis?- Interpretive
- Conceptual
- Theoretical
- Storied
- Argumentative - 20What makes a weak thematic analysis?- Descriptive
- Too many themes (some too similar)
- Themes do not link to the question
- Vague
- No clear diagram/map of analysis
