Flashcards
Multi-Store Model of Memory
Cards in this deck (14)
- 1Who founded the MSM?Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
- 2In Peterson and Peterson's investigation into short term memory, what did their methods consist of, what were their results and what were there conclusions? (SUPPORT FOR MSM)Method- P's asked to recall a trigram either immediately or after intervals of counting backwards in 3's; 3, 6, 9, 12,15, 18. This was a disaster task to inhibit rehearsal.
Results- Recall accuracy high after 0 secs and diminished after that. No p's were able to recall the tri's after 18 secs!
Conclusions- The capacity of STM diminishes to nothing after around 18secs, this means that STM only has a DURATION of 18 secs! - 3Draw out the MSM including the processes.Look at the example in your folder.
- 4Define the idea of coding. This refers to the FORMAT in which information is stored in one of the stores of MSM.
- 5Define the idea of capacity. This refers to the AMOUNT of information which may be held in any one store.
- 6Define the idea of duration. This refers to the amount of TIME information can be stored in any store.
- 7Within the first store (the sensory register), give the three measures for the coding, capacity and duration of the data of this store?CODING- 5x modalities (each sense)
CAPACITY- Very High
DURATION- Very short (less than 0.5 secs) - 8Within the second store (STM), give the three measures for the coding, capacity and duration of the data of this store?CODING- Mostly acoustic
CAPACITY- 7 (+/-2) units without chunking
DURATION- 18+ secs without rehearsal - 9Within the last store (LTM), give the three measures for the coding, capacity and duration of the data of this store?CODING- Semantically (meaningful)
CAPACITY- Unlimited
DURATION- Lifetime - 10What are the four important features of MSM? (useful to evaluate)1. Separate stores- don't overlap, have different coding, capacity and duration.
2. Only one STM store- singular, has no sub-components.
3. Only one LTM store- (same)
4. Rote rehearsal- only type of rehearsal, this is how information is held in the STM and transferred to the LTM. - 11What was the aim of Baddeley's experiment in 1966?To investigate the coding of the STM and the LTM.
- 12What were the methods?P's had to memorise the order of 5x simple syllable words.
- 13What were the results? When recalled immediately- words which SOUNDED similar were recalled with LOWER accuracy of their order.
When recalled after 20 minutes- words of similar MEANING were recalled with LOWER accuracy of their order. - 14What were the conclusions?STM- coded acoustically
LTM- coded semantically
