Immune System

izzy-whizzy Human Physiology and Anatomy English 9 cards

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1What are Major Histocomatibility Complex's (MHC) ?A cells bar code.
Also known as Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA).
It is unique (unless an identical twin).
Helps identify self and non-self tissues.
  2. 2What is an antigen?Anything that is non-self and can provoke an immune response.
  3. 3InterferonsChemical messengers that coordinate the defenses against viral infections.
  4. 4Complement SystemConsists of circulating proteins that assist in antibodies in the destruction of pathogens.
  5. 5What is the role of Cytotoxic T Cells ?To seek out and destroy abnormal and infected cells.
  6. 6What is the role of Suppressor T Cells ??To suppress the responses of other T cells and B cells by releasing inhibitory cytokines (suppression factors).
  7. 7Natural Killer Cells (NK Cells)Lymphocytes that induce cytolysis and kill microbes and tumor cells.
Found in blood, spleen, lymph nodes and red marrow.
Attack cells displaying abnormal MHC antigens.
Patients with AIDs or cancer have a decreased level of NK cells.
  8. 8PhagocytesTwo types; neutrophils and macrophages.
    Macrophages develop from enlarged monocytes.
Monocytes and neutrophils migrate to the infected areas.
They engulf or destroy bacteria or other small cells.
  9. 9What are the 5 stages of Phagocytosis?1- Chemotaxis
    2-Adherence
    3-Ingestion
    4-Digestion
    5-Killing
