Flashcards

Memory key words

Lily Bird Psychology AS level English 14 cards

Cards in this deck (14)

  1. 1CodingThe way that information is stored in the various memory stores.
  2. 2CapacityThe amount of information that can be held in a memory store.
  3. 3Short-term memory (STM)The limited-capacity memory store.
    Coding - mainly acoustic (sounds)
Capacity - 5-9 items on average
    Duration - 18-30 seconds
  4. 4Long-term memory (LTM)The permanent memory store.
    Coding - mainly semantic (meaning)
    Capacity - unlimited
Can store memories for up to a lifetime.
  5. 5Multi-store model (MSM)Represents how the memory works in terms of three stores;
    Sensory register
    Short-term memory (STM)
    Long-term memory (LTM)
Describes how information is transferred from one store to another.
How it is remembered and forgotten.
  6. 6Sensory registerMemory stores for each of the 5 senses.
    Vision - ionic store
    Hearing - echoic store
Coding is visual for ionic store and acoustic for echoic store.
Capacity is huge (millions of receptors)
Information lasts for a very short time (less than half a second)
  7. 7Episodic memoryLong-term memory store for personal events. Includes memories of when the events occured and of the people, objects, places and behaviours involved. Memories from this store have to be retrieved consciously and with effort.
  8. 8Semantic memoryA long-term memory store for our knowledge of the world. This includes facts and our knowledge of what words and concepts mean. These memories usually also need to be recalled deliberately.
  9. 9Procedural memoryA long-term memory store for our knowledge of how to do things. This includes our memories of learned skills. We usually recall these memories without making a conscious or deliberate effort.
  10. 10Working memory model (WMM)A representation of short-term memory (STM). Its suggests that STM is a dynamic processor of different types of information using sub-units coordinated by a central decision-making system.
  11. 11Central executive (CE)The component of the WMM that co-ordinates the activities of the three subsystems in memory. It also allocates processing resources to those activities.
  12. 12Phonological loop (PL)The component of the WMM that processes information in terms of sound. This includes both written and spoken material. It's divided into the phonological store and the articulatory process.
  13. 13Visuo-spatial sketchpad (VSS)The component of the WMM that processes visual and spatial information n a mental space often called our 'inner eye'.
  14. 14Episodic buffer (EB)The component of the WMM that brings together material from the other subsystems into a single memory rather that separate strands. It also provides a bridge between working memory and long-term memory.
