Flashcards
Chapter 5 - Sensory, Short-term, Working Memory
Cards in this deck (15)
- 1MemoryMechanism we use to create, maintain, and retrieve past information
- 2Modal Model of MemoryMemory modelled as mechanism that involves processing information through series of stages.
1. Sensory Memory
2. Short-term Memory
3. Long-term Memory - 3Sensory MemoryThe retention, for brief periods of time, of the effects of sensory stimulation
- 4Articulatory Rehearsal ProcessRehearsal process involved in working memory that keeps items in the phonological store from decaying.
- 5Central ExecutiveThe part of working memory that coordinates the activity of the phonological loop and the visuospatial sketch pad.
- 6Change DetectionDetecting differences between pictures or displays that are presented one after another.
- 7ChunkUsed in connection with the idea of chunking in memory. A collection of elements that are strongly associated with each other but weakly associated with elements in other chunks.
- 8ChunkingCombining small units into larger ones, such as when individual words are combined into a meaningful sentence. Can be used to increase capacity of memory.
- 9Control ProcessesIn the modal model of memory, active processes that can be controlled by the person and that may differ from one task to another. Rehearsal is an example.
- 10Digit SpanNumber of digits a person can remember, used as measure of capacity of short-term memory
- 11Episodic BufferComponent of working memory model that serves as a backup store that communicated with both Long-term memory and the components of working memory. Holds information longer and has greater capacity than phonological loo/visuospatial sketch pad.
- 12Phonological LoopThe part of working memory that holds and processes verbal and auditory information.
- 13RehearsalThe process of repeating a stimulus over and over, usually for purpose of remembering it, that keeps stimulus active in short-term memory.
- 14Phonological StoreComponent of the phonological loop of working memory that holds a limited amount of verbal and auditory info for a few seconds.
- 15Short-Term MemoryA memory mechanism that can hold a limited amount of info for a brief period of time, unless there is rehearsal.
