Correlations flashcards
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1What is a correlation?A research method that looks at the relationship between 2 variables
There is no IV + DV but instead there are 2 variables - 2Describe a positive correlationWhere both variables increase together
E.g. cake eating + weight gain - 3Describe a negative correlationAs one variable increases the other decreases
E.g. alcohol consumption + verbal ability - 4Which type of graph would be used to present a correlation?Scatter graph
- 5What is a correlation co-efficient?A number that is calculated to see how strongly related the 2 variables are
- 6Describe correlation co-efficientNumber ranges from -1 to +1
The closer they are to these values the stronger the correlation is
E.g. +0.9 is very strong, +0.01 is very weak - 7Evaluation of correlations Strength 1.1. Able to look at situations which cannot be manipulated experimentally due to ethics
E.g. stress + illness - 8Evaluation of correlations Weakness 1.1. It is only a relationship between the variables
This means you cannot establish cause + effect so there may be other variables involved
