Flashcards
The working memory model
Cards in this deck (5)
- 1The working memory model- Created by Baddeley an Hitch in 1974;
- Only concerns short term memory;
- It consists of the central executive and the slave systems: the visuo-spatial sketchpad, the phonological loop and the episodic buffer. - 2The central executive- Processes all the info from the senses and decides which is attended to by the slave systems;
- It has limited capacity and can only deal with one strand of info at a time;
- Baddeley (1996) discovered people found it difficult to generate lists of random numbers while switching from pressing letters and numbers on a keyboard;
- Info about the CE is limited and vague. - 3The phonological loop- Deals with auditory info;
- Divided into the primary acoustic store and articulatory process (the first is a store for words recently heard, the second deals with speech production);
- Trojani and Grossi (1995) reported a case study of an injury affecting the PL but not the VVS suggesting they are separate. - 4The visuo-spatial sketchpad- Handles non-phonological info and is a temporary store for spatial and visual items and the relationship between them;
- Logie (1995) divided it into the visual cache (store for forms and colours) an the inner scribe (spatial relationships);
- Klauer and Zhao (2004) reported more difficulty between two visual tasks than a visual task and a spatial one, suggesting the separation of them. - 5The episodic buffer- Baddeley (2000) added the third slave system as a general store for info;
