Multi-Store Model

Skye Mellor Psychology A level English 12 cards

Cards in this deck (12)

  1. 1Who created the multi-store model?* Atkinson and Shiffrin
  2. 2What is the multi-store model made up of?* The sensory register
    * The short term memory
    * The long term memory
  3. 3What goes into the sensory register?An environmental input Eg: somebodies name you have heard
  4. 4What are the characteristics of the sensory register?* Short duration - less than half a second
    * Large capacity
    * Two stores the iconic and the echoic
  5. 5What is the iconic store?The iconic store is the store where visual stumuli get stored visually
  6. 6What is the echoic store?The echoic store is where auditory stimuli get stored acoustically
  7. 7What are the characteristics of the short term memory?* Coding - acoustic
    * Capacity - 7+/-2
    * Duration - 18-30 seconds
    * Maintenance rehearsal
  8. 8What is maintenance rehearsal?Maintenance rehearsal is when you repeat something over and over again so that it stops in the short term memory for as long as we need it, if it is repeated enough times then it will be passed to the long term memory
  9. 9What are the characteristics of the long term memory?* Coding - Semantic
    * Capacity - Unlimited
    * Duration - Forever
    * Retrieval
  10. 10What is retrieval?Retrieval is when you consciously think of a memory so that it can pass along the rehearsal loop from the long term memory to the short term memory in order to be recalled
  11. 11What is a strength of the multi-store model theory?Shallice and Warrington studied a man called KF who suffered from amnesia after a motorcycle accident, they found that his short term memory was damaged but his long term memory was intact supporting the idea that they are both two separate stores.
  12. 12What are two weakness' of the multi-store model theory?* The multi-store model is criticised by the working memory model for being too simplistic. Tulving also criticises it for the same reason as he believes there is 3 stores of long term memory alone whereas Atkinson and Shiffrin say there are 3 stores altogether.
    * The materials used to find out the structure of the multi-store model are artificial therefore it limits the generalisability to real life situations due to the lack of mundane realism
