Memory

Will Singer Psychology A level English 5 cards

Cards in this deck (5)

  1. 1Multi-Store ModelAtkinson and Shiffrin (1968). 3 stores for memory. Sensory Register → Short Term Memory → Long Term Memory
  2. 2Sensory RegisterThis is a temporary “sensory buffer store” which holds material from the environment for a brief period of time following exposure. If information is not attended to it will be forgotten. There are different forms of the sensory register (Echoic or Iconic). How this information is coded depends on which sense is being used. Echoic memory is where the auditory information is coded acoustically. Iconic Memory is where visual information is coded visually. The sensory registers have a high capacity, for example over one hundred million cells in one eye, each storing data, but not for long. Very little of what enters the sensory register is actually processed.
  3. 3Short Term Memory (MSM)This is a limited capacity store. The capacity of STM is 7 items plus or minus 2 items. Information is coded acoustically. It lasts about 30s in short term memory unless it is rehearsed. Maintenance rehearsal occurs when we repeat material to ourselves over and over. We can keep material in the STM as long as we rehearse it. If we rehearse it a lot, it enters our long-term memory.
  4. 4Long Term Memory (MSM)This is a potentially permanent memory store. It has an unlimited capacity. It has a duration of a very long time. Information is coded semantically. When we want to access the information in LTM, we transfer into STM through retrieval.
  5. 5Evaluation of Separate Stores1. There is considerable research to support the assumption that there are two separate stores
    A. Baddeley’s study
    B. Primacy and Recency Effect, Glanzer & Cunitz
