Flashcards
Memory Flash Cards
Cards in this deck (20)
- 1Sensory MemoryHolds information for 1-2 seconds.
Most of the information that enters is lost.
If attention is payed it passes to the stm - 2Short Term MemoryInformation is held for 15-30 seconds.
If information is repeated several times it can be held for longer.
Can only hold 5-9 items at one time.
If rehearsed the information is passed onto the long term memory - 3Long Term MemoryInformation is held for a long time.
Unlimited Capacity. - 4What Was The Aim For The Peterson& Peterson Key StudyAim- To see if rehearsal is necessary to hold information in short term memory.
- 5What Was The Method For The Peterson& Peterson Key StudyMethod- Participants were given 3 sets of letters to remember but they were immediately asked to count backwards in threes out loud for different lengths of time. This was done to prevent rehearsal. They were then asked to recall the letters in the correct order.
- 6What Were The Results For The Peterson& Peterson Key StudyResults- They found participants had virtually forgotten all the information after 18 seconds.
- 7What Was The Conclusion For The Peterson& Peterson Key StudyConclusion- It was concluded that we cannot hold information in the short term memory store unless we can rehearse it.
- 8Evaluation points for For The Peterson& Peterson Key Study+ve The study was carried out in a lab environment so all of the variables were controlled.
-ve They conducted a study which focused on nonsense trigrams. This is not how we use our memory in real life, so the study lacks ecological validity.
-ve the study was only conducted on students so the study cannot be generalised. Their memories may be better as they are in a learning environment every day. - 9What Is The Duration For The STMduration- 15- 30 seconds
- 10What Is The Duration For The LTMduration- unlimited
- 11What Is The Capacity For The LTMCapacity- Unlimited
- 12What Is The Capacity For The STMCapacity- (7+/-2)
- 13How Do We Encode In The STMencode- mainly acoustic
- 14How Do We Encode In The LTMencode- semantic (by meaning)
- 15What Is The Multi Store Modelthe multi store model is an attempt at the explanation of memory. The model says we have different stores and they have to go through each of the stores.
- 16Who Created The Multi- Store ModelAtkinson and Shriffin
- 17What Year Was The Multi Store Model Created?1968
- 18What Was The Aim For Murdock's Key StudyAim To provide evidence for the Multi Store Model
- 19What Was The Method For Murdock's Key StudyMethod- He gave participants a list of words to remember and then asked them to recall the words in any order
- 20What Were The Results For Murdock's Key StudyResults- The words at the end of the list were recalled first (know as the recency effect). Words from the beginning of the list were recalled quite well (known as the primary effect) but words in the middle were not recalled well
