Craig Wilkinson Psychology English 10 cards

Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 1What were the findings of the Type 1 experiments?Control condition - slight primacy effect, stronger recency effect. 236 average.
  2. 2What were the findings of the Type 2 experiments?Slow presentation -strong primacy and recency effect. 268 average.
  3. 3What were the findings of the Type 3 experiments?Distractor at end - Primacy effect but not recency effect. 199 average.
  4. 4What were the findings of the Type 4 experiments?Distractor after each - slightly weaker primacy, strong recency, strong recency. 197 average.
  5. 5Why did slow presentation with no distractors get the best results? It strengthens both primacy and recency effects.
  6. 6What is the key assumption of Murdock's theory?Serial position effect is a result of short term proactive/retroactive inhibition acting together.
  7. 7How does Type 1, 2 and partially 4 support Murdock's theory? When participants remember primary or recent information, it is thought that they are recalling information from two separate stores (STM and LTM)
  8. 8What are the key assumptions of Glanzer's theory?Thinks that we get recent words from STM so we can access them uciker/better when recalling but we hold the first words in LTM
  9. 9How does Type 3 support Glanzer's theory? The words at the end of the list are only remembered if recalled first and tested immediately, and delaying recall by 30 seconds prevented recency effect.
  10. 10As retroactive inhibition is stronger, then......the most recently learned words are easiest to remember.
