Flashcards
MULTISTORE MODEL

Cards in this deck (6)
- 1Draw the MSM

- 2What are the two processes by which information is moved through the model?Attention & rehearsal
- 3Outline 1 piece of supporting evidence for the separate nature of the memory storesBaddeley (1966)
Study on coding - found that STM codes acoustically and LTM semantically
Shows that the two types of memory are different entities - 4Use evidence from case studies to criticise the modelShallice and Warrington
KF - Poor STM for auditory information but unimpaired for visual
Suggests that STM is not just one store, but is actually broken up into at least one store for auditory information and another for visual - 5Explain findings by Craik and Watson and why these challenge the MSMThe MSM assumes that the more rehearsal you do the better/the more likely information will pass to LTM
However Craik and Watson disagreed with this and said there are in fact two types of rehearsal
Maintenance rehearsal keeps things in STM however elaborative rehearsal is more important for LTM
This challenges the MSM as the model does not take into account the existence of a second type of rehearsal and cannot account for these findings - 6Research by Tulving has further been used to criticise the model. Why is this?Tulving proposed the existence of different types of LTM
Procedural, episodic and semantic
This is a problem for the MSM as the model sees LTM as a unitary store, where all types of information are stored in the same way until they are needed
