holding information in the memory system-possibly for a lifetime

retrieval

Recovering information from storage so it is located and brought back from the memory system

visually/structural-what words/ images look like

acoustically/phonetically encoded- learning sounds/words/images

semantically- what words/images mean

recoginition-being able to identify someone, or multiple choice questions

cue recall- when you are given a hint at the answer

free recall- when you retrieve the information without cues
