Climate
Map content
Climate
- The overall weather of an area over a long period of time.
Insolation
- The amount of solar radiation reaching a given area.
Causes possible Global Warming
- The shifting of plate tectonics, the greenhouse effect, more solar radiation (Less being blocked by the ozone layer)
Orographic Effect
- Precipitation which occurs along the side of a mountain
Pressure Belts
- Uneven heating the earth creates occuring every 30 degrees latitude
Rain Shadow
- A dry area on the side of a mountain
Microclimate
- Small climate within a small area which differs from the surrounding climate due to mountains, roads, etc.
February Climate (Philly)
- Sligthly more than 2 inches of rain, avg temp is 7 degrees
Possible factors of global cooling
- Asteroid impacts, volcanic eruptions, less sun radiation
Possible Factors of more extreme seasons
- More tilt in the earth's motions (Egg shape)
Reason behind seasons
- The tilt of the earth plays a major role in why the earth has seasons. In June, when the northern hemisphere of the earth is tilted towards the sun, it recieves direct rays. Likewise, in December, when the northern hemisphere of the earth is not tilted towards the sun, it does not recieve direct rays.
Latitude affecting climate
- Latitude affects climate because the shape of the earth allows the sun's rays to hit different latitudes on earth with different strengths, with the equator being the most consistant all year.
Altitude affecting climate
- Altitude affects climate because the higher the altitude, the colder the climate
Water affecting climate
- Areas closer to a body of water tend to recieve more rain
Pressure belts affecting climate
- Clear and dry weather occurs in the 30 and 90 degree latitudes. Rainy weather occurs at 0 and 60 degrees latitude
Reason Behind small areas having a specal climate
- Small areas may have a microclimate due to mountains, roads, buildings, etc.
How climate change could impact life
- Climate change could leave animals displaced from their habitat and crops may not grow because they're used to a different climate
How the orographic effect affects climate
- Climate is affected by the orographic effect because precipitation occurs on the windward side of a mountain, while none occurs on the leeward side
Prevailing winds effect on climate
- The prevailing winds affect climate because they determine which side of a mountain recieves rain and which way storms and fronts move.
