Memory

  1. Capacity

    • Limited Capacity
      • There have been arguments that the capacity is much larger than previously thought
      • Cowan (2001) investigated and found we can only memorise up to about 4 chunks and 4 visual items can be stored in the STM, challenging Miller's number
      • This means that Miller's Magic Number is not correct
    • Chunk Size
      • The size of the chunk affects how many items you can store
      • Simon (1974) found larger chunks result in a smaller memory span overall
