Pro/Retroactive interference

  1. AO1: Interference theory suggests that forgetting is due to information in LTM becoming confused with or disrupted by other information other information during coding, leading to inacurate recall. There are two types of interference: proactive and Retroactive

  2. Proactive interference

    • When Old information interferes with new information
      • For example: inputting an old password instead of a new one
        • Jacoby (2001) suggests this happens due to the strength of previous learning and the weakness of new learning.
  3. Retroactive interference

    • When New information interferes with Old information
      • For example: a new car registration stopping recall of a previous one
  4. P.O.R.N

    • Proactive = Old interfering with new
      • Retroactive = New interfering with old
