Comparing Multi-Store Model and Levels of Processing
Similarities
- Both LoP and MSM agree that for the memory to become long term, the memory has to be semantic and have meaning. The MSM proposes that there has to be elaborartive rehearsal before the memory goes into the LTM, LoP proposes that the memory has to be processed deeply with a meaning to be able to stay inn the LTM.
- Similarly the two studies mention that there is a LTM, the MSM refers to the LTM as the last store in the model which is achieved by elaborative rehearsal, LoP refers to it as the memory trace.
Differences
- MSM refers to memory as a very simplistic linear diagram which is the same way a computer generates information (input / process / output) whereas the LoP has a more complex way in which the memories are stored , it suggests that memories are remembered by how deep they are processed.
- MSM suggests that in order for a memory to become long term it needs to elaboratively rehearsed. In contrast LoP proproses that memories just have to be vivid and meaningful to go into the LTM they do not need to be rehearsed, it is just about the depth of how the memory is processed.
