Institutional Aggression

  1. Within group aggression: Prisons

    • A01: The Importation Model : Irwin and Cressey
      • Prisoners are violent because they import their experiences from the outside world into prison. So if the prisoner is experienced in using violence in the outside world, they will use violence in prison
      • Also, prisoners will import the type of violence they are familiar with. So if the prisoner is experienced with knives, they will use knives in prison - this is the same with any weapon
    • A02: Harer and Steffenmeier - research in the US
      • Black inmates were more likely to be violent than white inmates
        • White inmates were more likely to be addicted to drugs and alcohol than black inmates
          • Follows very similar patterns to those in society (outside of prison)
            • Supports the idea that violence is imported into prison
    • A02: Allender and Marcell
      • Pre-prison gang membership appears to be an important predictor of prison aggession
    • A02: DeLisi et al - critisism
      • Gang members were no more likely to be violent than non-gang members . This would suggest that the importation model is too simple
    • A02: Fischer
  2. Between group aggression: Genocide
