LOP VS MSM

  1. What is memory a consequence of?

    • Memory is a by-product of information processing
    • Consequence of attention and rehearsal
  2. LOP

  3. MSM

  4. Is there any supporting evidence?

    • Craik and Tulving study- but lab exp. not ecologically valid
    • Glanzer and Cunitz, and Peterson and Peterson. But, lab exp. not ecologically valid
  5. Is it a structural or a process model?

    • Process- looks at the 3 processes, doesn't look at storage
    • Both- Structure- 3 stores. Process- attention and rehearsal
  6. How is information/memory stored?

    • Structurally, Phonetically and Semantically
    • SM= perceptually STM= acoustically LTM= semantically
  7. What are the applications to real life?

    • Useful in school life for revision. Know things are better remembered when semantically processed
    • Not really relevant to real life, but know giving more attention and rehearsing more leads to better recall
  8. Is there any contradictory evidence?

    • Reber et al- emotional content of words affected recall
    • Morris et al- found phonetically processed words were better remembered/best recalled
    • KF- showed STM isn't just one store- he couldn't remember acoustically processed words but could remember visual.
