- LTM
- LTM
What is happening in the brain?
- Info can't be retrieved- but when a cue is present it can be
- Info isn't lost, just confused and distorted. Interference disappears when cues are given
What are the causes of forgetting?
- 1. Info is inaccessible. 2. Failure to store/decay
- Proactive: old interferes with new. Retroactive: new interferes with old.
Are there sub-types?
- -State cues: internal eg. being drunk. -Context cues- external eg.setting/enironment
- Proactive & Retroactive
Practical Applications?
- Reinstate cues of learning when recalling for better recall
- Very few
Criticising studies?
- No
- No
Supporting Studies?
- Godden and Baddeley; Duka et al; Miles and Hardman. All lack mundane realism but do yield cause and effect
- McGoech and McDonald; Jenkins and Dallenbach; Peterson and Peterson. All lab exp. so are reliable but lack ecological validity
Any problems that the theory can't explain?
- Doesn't account for emotional words. Doesn't explain difference between state and context cues
- Doesn't account for all types of forgetting. Doesn't explain how. Doesn't account for cues
