Neural Memory

  1. Consolidation theory; Proposes that structural or physical changed to the neurons in the brain occur when something new is being learned and immediately following learning.

  2. Amnesia; Loss of memory, either partial or complete, temporary or permanent.

    • Brain trauma; Refering to brain damage that impairs or interferes with the normal functioning of the brain.
    • Neurodegenerative disease; Is characterised by a progressive decline in the structure, activity and function of brain tissue.
      • Alzheimer's; Gradual widespread degeneration of brain neurons, causing memory loss, a decline in cognitive and social skills and personality changes.
    • Anterograde; Information or events experienced after the person sustains brain damage is lost.
    • Retrograde; Information or events experienced before the person sustains the damage.
  3. Memory decline;

    • If the task is relatively simple STM is not affected by age. However if the task is more complicated requiring storage and manipulation of information, or attention has to be divided. the age related factors impact STM.
    • Episodic memory has a steady decline for memories of personal experiences. Older people take longer to learn new information and skills. Speed and fluency or retrieval of information can decline. Lack of motivation and loss of confidence also effects LTM.
