LTM- Tulving

  1. Episodic memory:

    • personal experiences, autobiographical events that are time-stamped including people, places and behaviour, conscious effort required to recall them
  2. Semantic memory

    • Record of facts, meanings, concepts and knowledge about external world that we have acquired, likened to dictionary. Time-stamped
  3. Procedural memory:

    • memory for actions and skills of how we do things, e.g. walking done without consciouss awareness, not time stamped and very difficult to explanin to someone.
  4. AO3:

    • Tulving, episodic and semantic memories are in prefrontal cortex, semantic on left and episodic on the right
    • Belleville: devised an intervention to improve episodic memory in older people, results showed it helped. By distinguishing between different types of LTM helps us to treat issues with them.
    • Cohen said procedural is separate to episodic and semantic (Declarative memory)
