Working Memory Model (Page 28)

  1. The model

    • Central Executive
      • Episodic Buffer
        • Long Term Memory
        • Added by Baddeley as he realised the model needed a general store
        • An extra storage system that has limited capacity
        • Integrates info from the other components
      • Visuo-Spatial Sketch Pad
        • Used when you have to plan a spatial task (e.g. getting from one room to another)
        • Visual (what things look like) and/or spatial (relationship between things) info is stored here temp
        • Logie suggested it could be split in 2
          • Visual cache (store)
          • Inner scribe (deals with spatial relations)
      • Phonological Loop
        • Deals with auditory info
        • Baddeley divided it into 2
          • Phonological store (inner ear)
            • Holds the words you hear
          • Articulatory process (inner voice)
            • Silently repeats the words you hear/see
      • The key component
      • The function is to direct attention to particular tasks, determining how 'resources' are allocated to taks
      • Limited capacity - can't attend too many things at once
