Craik and Tulving Description

1. The aim was to investigate whether words processed at different levels would affect recognition of those words

2. 24 participants were shown 60 words and asked a series of questions about the word

3. The questions required structural, phonetic or semantic processing

   • Structural is what the word looked like
   • Phonetic is what the word sounded like
   • Semantic is what the word meant

4. Participants were then asked to recognise the original 60 words from are larger list of 180 words

5. 17% of the structurally processed words were recognised

6. 36% of the phonetically processed words were recognised

7. 65% of the semantically process words were recognised

8. Therefore the deeper the processing the greater the recognition
