Duration of Memory

  1. Short-term memory

    • Peterson and Peterson
      • Lack of mundane realism
        • The task doesn't hold external validity, because remembering constants and counting back in threes is not and everyday task
          • Reduces the validity of research because it doesn't replicate everyday life
      • The ability to recall is hindered by interference rather than decay
        • Given participants a second task to complete, meant participants were unable to rehearse the letters, but also interfered with previous learning
          • This suggest the duration of the STM maybe longer without interference
      • Small Sample size
        • Methodological problem to the study, is that the sample population was only 24
          • Reducing the generalisability because it doesn't represent the target population
  2. Long-term memory

    • Bahrick
    • Higher external Validity
      • Remembering a faces has higher external validity than remembering non-sense constants
        • This increases the reliability of the research conducted by Bahrick
