REASONS FOR BREAKDOWN

LACK OF SKILLS

individuals may lack the interpersonal skills to make a relationship satisfying.

poor conversationalists

poor at indicating their interest in other people and likely to be generally unrewarding in their interactions with others

others perceive them as not interested in relating so relationship breaks down before it even gets going

LACK OF STIMULATION

social exchange states people look for rewards, one of which is stimulation

evidence that boredom or belief the relationship isn't going anywhere, is often quoted when breaking off a relationship.

people expect relationships to change & develop, when they don't, it's seen as sufficient justification to end it or have an affair

MAINTENANCE DIFFICULTIES

strained due to not being able to see each other enough

university is often the cause of breakdown.

enduring relationships can be strong enough to survive the pressure of decreased daily contact, but for many this is not the case and difficulties become too overwhelming

PRECIPITATING FACTORS

exterior influences: love rivals

process features: incompatible working hours

emergent properties: lack of relationship direction

SUDDEN DEATH

discovery of betrayal/infidelity leading to immediate termination of the relationship.

MODEL OF BREAKDOWN

INTRAPSYCHIC

nothing said but expressed in other ways such as brooding on partner's faults

private dissatisfaction with relationship

DYADIC

confront partner & discuss feelings & the future.

SOCIAL

dissatisfaction spills over to friends & family who may offer support/ advice or even speed up dissolution by revealing something about one of the partners

negotiate children, finances for post-dissolution state

create blame-placing stories and build alliances

GRAVE DRESSING

each must present themselves as trustworthy/loyal to others, key for new relationships

create representation of failed relationship that does not make their contribution to it look unfavourable.

in resurrection, prepare for new relationship & define what to get out of future ones.

reassess goals, possibilities, commitments
