190 resources created by 162 users

This Biomes and Rainforests page on GoConqr gathers community-made mind maps, quizzes, flashcards and notes, from tropical rainforest locations and the Amazon to deforestation, sustainable management and boreal forest. It's built for school students going over a topic and teachers after ready-made material, with a few university and professional learners in the mix. There are over 180 resources here, including more than 130 mind maps, over 30 flashcard decks and a small set of quizzes, mostly at secondary level. Pick a mind map, then test yourself with a quiz.

About Biomes and Rainforests

GoConqr Original

What this page covers

This unit sits in the strand Biomes, Habitats and Land, within Environmental science and ecology. Most of the resources focus on tropical rainforests, with others on global biomes, cold environments and fragile areas. Everything was made by GoConqr users, so styles differ from one resource to the next.

Where to start

Begin with the mind map Ch. 4 Global Climates and Biomes. It shows how climate shapes the plants of a region and how aquatic biomes are sorted by salinity, depth and water flow. Then move to Tropical Rainforests, which explains where rainforests are found, around the Equator between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.

Next, try Types of Forest. It sets taiga, found in Canada, Scandinavia and Russia, beside tropical forest, so you can compare biomes side by side.

People and the rainforest

A large share of the page deals with human impact. Follow this order:

  1. Read the mind map Deforestation for causes such as timber and cattle ranching, and effects such as flooding and global warming.
  2. Look at Deforestation in Malaysia for a country example, including logging and mining.
  3. Finish with Sustainable Management in Tropical Rainforests, which covers selective logging, where only some trees are felled.

Using maps and quizzes together

Read a map first, then close it and take a quiz from memory. The Amazon Rainforest quiz asks about the age of the forest, the number of countries it covers and the layers of a tropical rainforest. Any question you miss tells you which branch of a map to read again.

Flashcards help with fixed facts. The deck Rainforests lists main ecological features such as a warm, stable climate, plenty of light and heavy rainfall. Some resources name exams such as GCSE Geography, AP Environmental Science and A-level Biology, so look for the ones that match your course.

Make it your own

Once you have worked through a few resources, build a short map or flashcard set of your own for the case study you find hardest.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the mind map Ch. 4 Global Climates and Biomes for the big picture of climate and biomes. Then open Tropical Rainforests to see where rainforests are found. After that, the Deforestation mind maps and the sustainable management maps build on what you have learned.

Are there quizzes on this page?

Yes, a small set of quizzes. They include Amazon Rainforest, Rainforest ecosystem, Living Near a Tropical Rainforest and Geography Tropical Rainforests. Use them after reading a mind map, so you can see which parts of the topic need another look.

What do the mind maps cover?

There are more than 130 mind maps. Most deal with tropical rainforests, including location, deforestation, the Amazon, Malaysia and Indonesia, and sustainable management. Others cover forest types, boreal forest, human impact on biomes and threats to Antarctica.

Are the resources free, and who made them?

Every resource here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Which exams do these resources suit?

Most are at secondary level. Some resources mention GCSE Geography, AP Environmental Science and A-level Biology. Because the content is community-made, check that a resource matches your own course before relying on it.

What if I can't find the topic I need?

Try nearby resources first. Deserts, cold environments, fragile areas and climate diagrams are all listed alongside the rainforest material. If your topic is still missing, you can make your own mind map or flashcard deck for it.
