About DNA Replication and Repair
GoConqr OriginalWhat this page covers
This unit sits in the Molecular Biology and Gene Expression strand of Biochemistry. It brings together how cells copy DNA and how they fix it when something goes wrong. The resources were made by GoConqr users, mostly as study material for their own university courses.
Replication first
Start with the flashcards. The deck BM210 biochemistry asks what a primer must have, what makes up the lagging strand and how the two replication forks are created. The untitled deck covers DNA polymerase III exonuclease activity, the role of DNA polymerase I and Okazaki fragments. The deck Biochemistry Ch. 28 - DNA Replication and Lecture 39 - DNA Replication give you more of the same topic from other courses.
Then test yourself. The quiz BCM-FINAL, PT 2 asks you to match enzymes such as DNA polymerase I, primase, ligase, topoisomerase and helicase with their functions. Molecular Motors- Helicases looks at how helicase unwinds DNA and handles branched structures.
Damage and repair
The quiz Protein-DNA Interactions- DNA Repair asks what causes hydrolysis damage, damage from reactive oxygen species and alkylation damage. The mind map DNA Repair Prokaryote walks through nucleotide excision repair step by step: UvrA and UvrB scan the DNA, UvrC binds, UvrBC cleaves, UvrD unwinds, and DNA polymerase I and ligase seal the gap. The note on DNA damage and repair covers how mutations change gene function, including RAS in cancer. The mind map Cancer 1 links mutation, carcinogens and disease.
Using quizzes and maps together
- Read a mind map to see the whole pathway.
- Take a quiz on the same topic and note what you missed.
- Go to a flashcard deck to drill those gaps.
- Return to the map and see if the steps now make sense.
The flowchart HR explained is a short extra for homologous recombination. Teachers can also use any of these items as ready-made starting points for a class.
Where to go next
Pick one quiz from this list, see how it goes, and then make your own map or deck of the parts you want to remember.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
If you are new to the topic, try the flashcard deck BM210 biochemistry for primers, the lagging strand and replication forks. If you already know the basics, the quiz BCM-FINAL, PT 2 asks you to match replication enzymes with their functions, which quickly shows what you still need to review.
What do the mind maps cover?
There are a few mind maps. DNA Repair Prokaryote follows nucleotide excision repair step by step. Cancer 1 links spontaneous and induced mutation to carcinogens. Other maps look at radiation-induced damage, DNA damage and the enzymes of DNA polymerase III. Together they help you see the processes as a whole.
Are these resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you create your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Who are these resources for?
They are made for university students going over replication and repair topics, and for teachers who want ready-made material to adapt. All the resources here are at university level. They come from over 20 contributors, so the style and depth vary from one item to the next.
Is there anything on DNA damage as well as replication?
Yes. The quiz Protein-DNA Interactions- DNA Repair covers damage from hydrolysis, reactive oxygen species and alkylation. Several flashcard decks cover DNA damage and repair, including one on repair and tolerance, and a mind map covers the response to radiation-induced damage.
What if the topic I need is missing?
Resources here come from the community, so some topics may be thin. Check the flashcard decks and notes for nearby material, then build your own quiz, mind map or deck on the missing topic. Your own version can match your course exactly.
