Carbohydrate Metabolism

307 resources created by 206 users

This Carbohydrate Metabolism page on GoConqr gathers community-made quizzes, mind maps, flashcards, flowcharts and notes, from glycolysis and gluconeogenesis to glycogen metabolism, fructose handling and the pentose phosphate pathway. It's built for university students and professional candidates revising a pathway or testing recall, and for teachers after ready-made material. There are over 300 resources here, including more than 40 quizzes, over 100 mind maps and over 120 flashcards, all at university level. Try a quiz to find your gaps, then open a map.

About Carbohydrate Metabolism

GoConqr Original

What the unit covers

This unit sits in the Metabolism strand of Biochemistry. Its resources follow glucose through its main routes: breakdown, storage, rebuilding and side pathways.

  • Glycolysis: several flashcard decks, flowcharts such as Glycolytic Pathway, and the quiz Anaerobic Metabolism - The Glycolysis Pathway, which asks where glycolysis happens and has you fill in its four stages.
  • Glycogen: the quiz Glycogen Phosphorylase, the Glycogenesis flashcards and a Glycogen Degradation flowchart.
  • Gluconeogenesis: a quiz on normal blood glucose ranges, plus several mind maps.
  • Other routes: the Fructose metabolism quiz, the pentose phosphate pathway and the citric acid cycle.

Where to start

Begin with glycolysis. The flashcard deck Glycolysis covers where it occurs, the net products and which steps use ATP. Then take Anaerobic Metabolism - The Glycolysis Pathway to check the stages stuck.

Next, move to storage and release. Use the Glycogenesis flashcards, which ask what inhibits and stimulates glycogen synthase and what UDP-Glucose does. Then try the Glycogen Phosphorylase quiz, which asks which form is relatively inactive and how AMP and ATP levels matter.

Using quizzes and maps together

Quizzes show what you cannot yet recall. Mind maps show how pathways connect. After a quiz, open a map such as Gluconeogenesis or the one that combines glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, the Krebs cycle and the pentose phosphate pathway, and find the step you missed. Then go back to the flashcards for that step.

Some questions test enzyme behaviour. The CAS 3_KML quiz, for example, asks how malonate, a competitive inhibitor of succinate dehydrogenase, affects kinetic parameters. Two decks are labelled for the MCAT: MCAT carbohydrate metabolism and MCAT Carbohydrate Metabolism: Aerobic Respiration.

For teachers

Teachers can set a quiz or share a map as ready-made material, then pair it with a flashcard deck for revision.

Pick one pathway, work through its quiz, and then build your own maps or flashcards to fill any gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the Glycolysis flashcard deck, which covers where glycolysis occurs, its net products and where ATP is used. Then take the quiz Anaerobic Metabolism - The Glycolysis Pathway. Once those feel familiar, move on to the glycogen and gluconeogenesis resources.

What do the mind maps on this page cover?

The mind maps, of which there are over 100, cover glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, glycogen synthesis and breakdown, the pentose phosphate pathway and the Krebs cycle. Some link several pathways on one map, while others look at the regulation of glucose metabolism from a liver-centred view.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, maps, flashcards and notes.

Which levels and exams do these resources suit?

All the resources are at university level, so they suit university students and professional candidates, as well as teachers looking for ready-made material. Two flashcard decks are labelled for the MCAT: MCAT carbohydrate metabolism and MCAT Carbohydrate Metabolism: Aerobic Respiration.

Is there anything on fructose or other sugars?

Yes. The Fructose metabolism quiz asks about fructose-1-phosphate, aldolase B and fructokinase. There is also a mind map on the metabolism of hexoses other than glucose, and a quiz on fructose and galactose metabolism. A note on lactose intolerance is listed too.

What if the topic I need is missing?

Look through the other formats first, since a topic may appear as a flowchart, note or mind map rather than a quiz. If you still cannot find it, you can make your own flashcards, maps or quizzes with a free account and study from those.
