About Financial Markets

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The resources here follow financial markets from the ground up. Some explain what a financial market is and its three functions. Others split markets into money markets, capital markets and foreign exchange, and look at bonds, shares, coupons and maturity. The Functions of Stock Exchanges mind map covers providing a market for buying and selling shares and government securities. The Offshore Market mind map looks at tax regimes.

Where to start

  1. Begin with the flashcards Financial Markets and Part 2.2: The structure of financial markets and financial assets to learn the basic terms: money, liquidity, equity, debt.
  2. Move to mind maps such as The Debt Market, The Money Markets and B3: Bond markets, then to the Fixed Income flashcards.
  3. Finish with the theory: EMH and Market Efficiency cover weak-form tests and why abnormal profits are absent when prices reflect information.

Trading and market structure

Several maps look at who does what in a market: Brokers, Dealers, Informed Traders, Trader Profiles and Orders and Market Execution. Extent of asy Inf explains adverse selection costs, drawing on Bagehot's 1971 argument. If you work with electronic trading, the FIX Protocol Introduction quiz asks about the protocol's advantages and its open source engine.

Exam preparation

Professional candidates will find the Series 6: Section 1 flashcards, which define authorised stock, issued stock, IPOs, treasury stock and pre-emptive rights, and the Series 7 - Brokerage Support Services deck. Several maps also cover UK and international market structure.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a mind map first, then take a quiz on the same topic without looking. Where you slip, return to the map or flashcards and try again. Teachers can set a map as reading and a quiz as a check.

This unit sits in the Financial Markets and Investments strand of Finance and banking. Open a map, take a quiz, and build your own set when you are ready.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the Financial Markets flashcards or the Part 2.2 flashcards on the structure of financial markets and financial assets. They set out the basic terms, such as money, liquidity, equity, debt and the types of market. Then move on to the bond and money market mind maps.

Which exams do these resources mention?

The listed resources mention Series 6, Series 7 and CSC. The Series 6: Section 1 flashcards cover stock terms such as authorised, issued and treasury stock, and there is a Series 7 deck on brokerage support services. Check your own syllabus alongside them.

What do the mind maps cover?

The mind maps cover the functions of stock exchanges, offshore markets, market efficiency and the EMH, brokers, dealers and informed traders, order execution, bond markets and money markets. There are also several maps on financial markets in Australia and on UK and international market structure.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself, so it is worth checking them against your course materials.

Can I save my quiz scores or make my own resources?

A free account saves your quiz scores and lets you create your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes. That is useful if you want to turn a topic like fixed income or market efficiency into a set tailored to your revision.

What if the topic I need is missing?

Try a related title first. Bond topics appear under Fixed Income, The Debt Market and B3: Bond markets, and stock topics under Functions of Stock Exchanges and Capital Market. If nothing fits, make your own mind map or flashcards.
