About Group Communication
GoConqr OriginalWhat the page covers
The resources follow the usual path of a group communication course. The mind map COMMUNICATING IN GROUPS opens with the nature of groups: a small collection of people who interact, usually face-to-face, over time to reach goals. The flashcards in Group Communication ask how many people form a group, what the different types are, and what defines a primary group.
Where to start
- Begin with the deck Chapter 1 Communication Competence in Groups. It covers kinds of groups, virtual teams and myths such as communication being a cure-all.
- Move to Chapter 2: Groups as Sytems, which asks what a system is, what entropy means and what structuration theory says.
- Read the notes on the structure of small groups in Chapter 10.
- Finish with problem solving and decision making.
Problem solving, decisions and conflict
The mind map SOLVING PROBLEMS IN GROUPS sets out when and why groups solve problems, including the advantage that groups can produce more and better solutions than individuals working alone. Two flowcharts follow the decision-making chapters. COMS Ch. 7 breaks decision making into steps such as problem recognition and inference drawing. COMS Ch. 8 deals with information bias and groupthink, listing symptoms such as the illusion of invulnerability. There is also a mind map on conflict.
Using maps, cards and the quiz together
Read a mind map first to see how the ideas connect. Then test yourself with the matching flashcards, covering terms such as grouphate or the definition of a small group. The chapter-based study guide decks are handy for a final review. The page also holds a quiz, Oral Comm Final., so you can check what has stuck.
Where it sits
This unit belongs to the strand Interpersonal, Group and Intercultural Communication, within Communication and journalism. Teachers can use the decks and maps as ready-made starting points for a class.
Choose one chapter, work through its map and cards, and then make a set of your own to fill any gaps.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the flashcard deck Chapter 1 Communication Competence in Groups. It covers kinds of groups, virtual teams and common myths about communication. After that, the mind map COMMUNICATING IN GROUPS gives you the overall picture, and the deck Chapter 2: Groups as Sytems moves on to how groups work as systems.
What do the mind maps cover?
There are over 8 mind maps. They deal with the nature of groups, theories, problem solving, a process view of group problem solving, working in groups and conflict. SOLVING PROBLEMS IN GROUPS, for instance, sets out the advantages of groups over individuals when tackling a problem.
Is there a quiz on this page?
Yes. The page lists one quiz, Oral Comm Final., alongside a good number of flashcard decks that work as self-tests. Try the quiz after reading a map or two, and note which topics feel shaky before you go back to the cards.
Are these resources free, and who made them?
Every resource here is free to open and study, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
What level are the resources?
Nearly all are at university level, so they suit university students taking a group communication course. Teachers can also use them as ready-made material. Many decks follow textbook chapters, such as the final exam study guide decks for Chapters 8, 10, 11 and 12.
What if I can't find the topic I need?
Look through the decks and maps on decision making, conflict and group structure, as the topic may sit under a chapter title. If it is still missing, you can make your own flashcards, mind map or notes and build the set you need.
